JUST THE DIFFERENCE

There are two ways of making a living, working for it, and | working others for it. If you don't work for it yourself, squirm | and wriggle as you will, quote political economy until you're | black in the face, the ugly, commonsense fact remains, that | someone else is working for it, while you get it. Labor, the | fertiliser, applied to Land, the all-mother, is the sole source of | wealth.

"Aha! I have you now," says the owner of broad acres; | "yonder is Labor, I am the Land. He gets his wage, I take my | rent."

No, my friend, you are not the Land. You are only an | excrescence on the land ~~ a parasite on its fertility, like the | rabbits, grasshoppers, and grubs.

That's just the difference.

Again, friend investor, you claim to be a useful member of | society. Well, just ponder this: Had Adam saved a pound a week | for all the 930 years of his life, he would have left behind him | the modest sum of £48,000. And very nice, too! do you say? But | wait. Suppose the patriarch had invested the sum of one penny | at compound interest ~~ say 5 per cent ~~ you will probably be | astounded to know that £48,000 wouldn't pay his probate | duties. True, it would take 14 years for that penny to grow to | twopence, and 112 years for it to grow to a pound. But at the | end of 200 years it would have increased to £100, and in the | 333rd year of the investment Adam's credit balance would stand | at £48,000. From this date the amount would grow apace until, | at the day of the gentleman's demise, a sum of 221,700 millions | of pounds would be left for division amongst his family.

If you care to carry the matter a little further, suppose that | the original investment had been forgotten, and the amount | allowed to accumulate until the present day, considerations of | space would not permit us to print the number of golden | sovereigns that that primeval penny had grown into. Suffice to | say that in round figures, it would be represented by 6589, | followed by 119 naughts. The saving of a pound a week from | the product of honest labor for a like period would only run into | a miserable £300,000. That's just the difference.
