In this story a young navel cadet joins the ill-fated Franklin expedition to the Arctic, taking a slipper worked by his sister as a memento of home. Fourteen yers later the position of the slipper among the relics found by M’Clintock tell his mother and sister that he died before his suffering could be prolonged. The story was reprinted in Lucy and Christian Wainwright and Other Stories.
