Notes

The story appeared in MP under the initials 'C.D.'. It appeared in Coleridge's The Face of Carlyon and Other Stories, and is referred to in a a letter thanking her and enclosing a cheque.

A letter of uncertain date addressed to Elizabeth Charlotte Curteis, which refers to 'your eagle and goose story' cannot therefore refer to this story, and must relate to the Christmas number of 1872, which took the proverb as a theme.
