Winchester Female Refuge, The (organization)

Description

The Hampshire Telegraph (23 January 1867) recorded that 'On Sunday last a sermon was preached by the Rev. Dr. Moberly, late head master of Winchester College, at the Church of Holy Trinity, in aid of the funds of the Winchester Female Refuge.’ It is mentioned in a letter to Edith Jacob (21 March 1867). It is also found as the Government Female Refuge, Winchester and the Winchester Refuge for Fallen Women. George Ridding and Josephine Butler seem both to have been interested in it. The Winchester Refuge for abused women which exists today is not connected.
