Nonconformist, The (periodical)

Description

This was a newspaper founded in 1841 by a dissenting clergyman, the Rev. Edward Miall, who edited it until 1877. It advocated non-payment of tithes and the disestablishment of the Church of England; CMY was as unlikely to sympathise with its views as it was with hers. See D. W. Bebbington, ‘Miall, Edward (1809–1881)’, Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, Oxford University Press, Sept 2004.
