He was created (1872) 1st Lord Selborne and (1882) 1st Earl of Selborne. He was briefly engaged to Mary Coleridge in the summer of 1845; he then married (2 February 1848) Lady Laura Waldegrave (d. 1885). [PB: ODNB]
