Bishop of Winchester.
Biography
He was unpopular in Hursley as he refused to ordain the Rev. Peter Young. He seems to have been a conscientious but mildly Evangelical bishop who shared the alarm felt by many at the extremism of the Tractarians. He retired owing to ill health in 1869. He was father of the Rt. Rev.
George Henry Sumner.
