Richard Bargusc.1722-1805

Description

great-grandfather of CMY

Biography

CMY describes him as 'a naval officer, who after sailing round the world with Lord Anson, had settled at Fareham, in Hampshire' (Coleridge, Life 4). He died in his 83rd year at Fareham (Gentleman’s Magazine, 1805, 389). He married, first (Rowner 1745), Frances Eyer and, secondly (Fareham 1759), Ann Lock. His second wife’s death is also recorded in the Gentleman’s Magazine (1814) 87. According to the Hampshire Allegations for marriage licences they were 36 and 25 at marriage. It appears from the IGI that the Rev. Thomas Bargus (christened Fareham 1753) and Mary (Bargus) Bogue were the children of his first marriage, Sophia (Bargus) Leeke, Charlotte Bargus and John Lock Bargus (b. 1762/3) of the second. There may have been other children.
