Person’s Profile
Charles Duke Yonge(1812-1891)
Description
historian, cousin of CMY
Biography
CMY never mentions this cousin, who was the eldest son of her
Eton uncle, and some of whose long list of publications have sometimes been confused with some of hers. The
Standard (1 April 1837) records his appearance before the Insolvent Debtors Court in connection with a long list of debts, amounting to over £2000, which he was unable to pay. He was described as the son of a widow who allowed him £250 a year, who had taken a first-class degree at Oxford, but had aspired 'to the reputation of fashionable men.' This episode is not mentioned by the ODNB, which records his later career, but might have created prejudice against him in the family.
