Biography
He was the father of father of Mary Emma, James Batten and Frances Charlotte Hilare Coulthard. Deirdre Le Faye, Jane Austen’s Letters, 511, calls him James Battin Coulthard (1782-1856). The Mrs Coulthard whom Jane Austen called (11 April 1805), 99, ‘a good-hearted, friendly woman’, was, Le Faye thinks, his stepmother Frances Barlow (1764-1829), who married his father Thomas Coulthard (1756-1811) in 1784. Perhaps there was some connection with Hilare Barlow (d.1757), second wife of the first Earl Nelson, who subsequently (1837) married Austen’s nephew George Thomas Knight . [1841 census]
