Daughter of Edmund and Mary Hicks of Otterbourne, she is recorded as nurserymaid to the four small children of the Rev. George Merriman, headmaster of the Royal Grammar School Guildford in the census of 7 April 1861, but was sent home for idleness by 28 May 1862.
