Biography
He succeeded John Frewen Moor as Vicar of Ampfield. He married first (3 August 1887), Emily Man, secondly (27 October 1891), Mary Louisa Man, and thirdly (14 July 1909) Lucy Louisa Bury. He was father by his third marriage of the Rev. Wilbert Vere Awdry (1911-1997), the author of Thomas the Tank Engine (1946). Son of Sir John Wither Awdry (1795-1878), chief justice of Bombay, he was brother of Frances Awdry, the Rt. Rev. William Awdry and Charles Awdry. Sir John Awdry’s mother Jane Bigg was the sister of Sir William Heathcote’s mother Elizabeth (Bigg) Heathcote, and he was therefore cousin to Sir William and to the Rev. William Bigg Wither.
