[1861]

MS location unknown. This fragment printed by Christabel Maxwell, Mrs Gatty and Mrs Ewing, (1949) 140-1.

I quite agree with you as to the promise of power in Aunt Judy’s doings . . . tell her that I shall like to have her intended story.1 I like to hear that you are about one of the Aunt Judy race too, but really between Aunt Judy herself and you as Aunt Judy, it is not easy to distinguish in one’s letters which one means, though there is no such difficulty in the Packet. She shows herself entirely original by so completely avoiding your style.

1Gatty’s daughter, Juliana Horatia Gatty (1841-1885), later Ewing, was the model for the persona Gatty adopted for her “Aunt Judy” tales in the MP in 1858. In 1861 Juliana began sending her own fictional tales to the MP. These tales were collected and published as Melchior’s Dream and Other Stories (1862) and The Brownies (1865). After the founding of Aunt Judy’s Magazine (edited by Gatty) in 1866 Ewing’s works were first published there.
