MS British Library Add MSS 54920: 126-7
Dear Mr Macmillan,
I shall be very glad to mark off the chapters that would suit best for the school abridgement of Golden Deeds. Having tried some on my own school children I can do it the better. I should fancy the reading book Mr Lea proposes to be something of what Dr Vaughan was about, and I also know a lady who I believe has one in hand.
Tell me how soon you would like to have a selection made, and also how many chapters would suit your purposes. I don’t think one could find many very striking money Golden Deeds. Perhaps Mr Budgett’s throwing all his adulterated pepper and sugar into the Bristol Channel is the best on record.1 There is a curious story in Lady Pomfret’s letters of a man who made restitution of Church Property. I looked it out for the Golden Deeds but the motives would not have been enough understood.
Yours sincerely
C M Yonge
Many thanks for Mr Lea’s pamphlet. I am just going to read it, I have not heard of Meltrai for a long time.
