My dear Miss Smith
Thank you for the Acrostic, but I had decided on leaving that field to the Magazine for the Young, which always has a batch of Acrostics at Christmas.2 I have so often refused them on that score that I could not take these. We guessed all except the two Es, which I do not quite understand, unless it means Edward and Elizabeth – and for Idiot too we had to go to the answer.

yours sincerely
C M Yonge

1In envelope addressed to Miss Smith/ 8 Wellington Road/ Old Charlton/ SE and postmarked Winchester 20 August and London SE 21 August 1866.
2In fact the Magazine for the Young was increasingly making a feature of acrostics, not just at Christmas but throughout the year.
