MS Charlotte Mitchell

My dear Miss Jacob,
I think the dream exceedingly beautiful, it went quite to my heart, and the vision of the mother saving the children was the pleasanter to meet with because I remember once talking it over with the dear Warden Barter, though whether I first heard it from him I cannot remember, at any rate it brought me his face and voice.

The only thing that I should have a shadow of doubt about is the putting words into the mouth of the Prince Himself. I think I had almost rather the permission to Gabrielle came spoken by an angel,1 though the sight of Him on the Crystal Sea, is most beautiful, is it not believed that His Presence is the full consummation of bliss? But perhaps the passing sight for the time in the Human Nature is not inconsistent with this. The husband’s death is most beautiful, and so is the part about the prayers.

I am not sure whether you meant that I might have the Dream for the Monthly Packet but if I may, I should very much like to have it for the May number, which will come out before the Easter brightness has passed.

In that case the only difference it would be desirable to make would be the actual speaking of the Prince. The sight of Him as being in a dream, need not I think be parted with.

I see now how thoroughly you must have entered into Blake and his Job.

Coming to earthly considerations [a half-sheet has been cut off ] . . . Refuge at Winchester, but I am not sure of the hand writing

yours sincerely
C M Yonge

12High Church “reserve” made CMY very chary of writing what she regarded as sacred names in a secular context. It seemed to her particularly inappropriate to put invented words into the mouth of Christ. The question is discussed in more detail in her next letter to Jacob (1 April 1867).
