MS Bodleian Library, Oxford: MSS. Wilberforce c. 16 ff64-51

My Lord,
Allow me to express my gratitude for the kindness of your invitation and of the arrangement for the journey. I must however beg to decline it until another year when I hope I may have the pleasure of making your daughter’s acquaintance under more cheerful circumstances.

I cannot at present feel inclined to enter on a large party, nor to leave my mother, and I should be much obliged if you would allow me to consider the visit as deferred until some future time.2

With many thanks for your kindness
Yours very respectfully
Charlotte M Yonge

1Black-edged paper.
2CMY had been in Devon in October, returning on 12 November 1867. This excuse to Bishop Wilberforce may mark the beginning of her mother’s decline.
