MS Charlotte Mitchell

Amiable Beloved
Can dear Eyes feel great hope in joy kindling lonely Margaretta’s notions of procuring quarters reposefully secure through united votes with xpressed youthful zeal – ?

The alphabet will not serve me to express that I never gave you the direction to the lady who will try to get votes for Miss Erle, and here it is.1 Mamma is very well and bright. The Chair is to be sent for to be inspected at home

your affectionate
C M Yonge

The address is

Miss Carter Smith
8 Wellington Road
Charlton

1Jacob is evidently seeking the admission of Miss Erle, whose first name was presumably Margaretta or Margaret, to a home for incurables. CMY had a subscriber's vote at the Royal Hospital for Incurables, but the Home for Incurable and Infirm Women is another possibility.

  1. Ellen Jordan says:

It took me a little while to register that the first sentence has been contorted to create an alphabet of words. Does this suggest that CMY and Edith Jacob enjoyed playing word and spelling games together?
