My dear Mrs Valentine,
I have got my Armada story home, and on looking over it, I think it will answer your purpose very well, but I must copy it out again to take out the real names and to improve it. I suppose about 70 or 80pp of the size of the specimen I send which is the first chapter.1

Please return it, when you have glanced over it, and tell me if it will do. The scenery is real, but I have changed the names and transposed that of the river – the Yealm. I think the boat would make a pretty illustration.

How ingeniously the young ladies playing at games have been varied in the Home Book!

Yours sincerely
C M Yonge

1It sounds as if Valentine had solicited a contribution to one of the annuals she edited for Warne.
