Dear Madam,
I am afraid I cannot tell you the exact sum required for the maintenance of a child in the Melanesian school in Norfolk island 2 So much of the produce grown on the farm is used for the purpose that the calculation is not easy, but I think it may be estimated at about £8 for each scholar, though I do not speak with any certainty

Yours truly
C M Yonge

2CMY was a collector for the Melanesian Mission, which had its training centre on Norfolk Island, to which the former inhabitants of Pitcairn had also been transferred in 1856. The Pitcairners, descendants of survivors of the mutiny on H.M.S.Bounty, attracted much interest in England, and Anne Mackenzie was collecting donations for them.
