3The decennial performance of the Passion Play in the Bavarian village of Oberammergau had become a popular tourist attraction. The 1870 performance was interrupted by the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War, and was resumed in June 1871 (Pall Mall Gazette 9 June 1871).
