Dear Miss Medhurst
I like your New Year’s Eve poem, but I ought to have had it long ago.

If you have not disposed of it otherwise, will you send it to me next October for December of 1873.

I believe Mrs Mercier has put a little pupil of mine under your care as member of the Guild Emmeline Spratt. She is a really good girl I believe, and very affectionate but I should not wonder if you thought her a little sentimental

Yours truly
C M Yonge

  1. Ellen Jordan says:

Any idea what the “Guild” she belonged to was? Too early for Lady Mary Feilding’s Working Ladies’ Guild which began in 1877 and the even later Girls’ Guildry.
