MS Charlotte Mary Yonge Society/2

My dear Mrs Elgie

I send the gathering here for the Altar Cloth. I hear this morning that Mr Harrison has not promised Crookham to anyone about whom the inhabitants have written, so it might be worth while to apply to him now, though I doubt it and I quite see all your reasons for wishing for a change.1 It is a great misfortune that Otterbourne is not an incumbency as it prevents the being seated. And I think the natures of the people here are much averse to change, and that they have just had time to become attached to Mr Elgie in all ranks. Personally as I said before I should be excessively sorry but that cannot be helped.

yours affectionately
C M Yonge

1The Rev. Walter Elgie was curate of Otterbourne 1870-1876, and then, after it was formed into a separate parish, vicar until his death in February 1881. He was evidently looking for a better job. The Rev William Dann Harrison, Vicar of South Stoneham, and Crondell, Hampshire, had the gift of the living of Crookham cum Ewshott, an ecclesiastical district formed in 1841 out of the parish of Crondell. Mary Anne Dyson lived nearby and had no doubt alerted CMY. The Church News noted the appointment of a new vicar of Crookham (7 June 1875), 3.
