Dear Madam

I am much obliged for your gift of the ‘Names on the Gates of Pearl1 – I am already a great admirer of it, and introduced it to Miss Mackenzie (the sister of the late Bishop of Zululand and editor of the Net, and she has sent it to some of her Missionary friends I will do what more I can for I am sure it ought to be known.

yours truly
C M Yonge

(1875) was the first book published by the evangelical theologian Charles Henry Waller (1840-1910), lecturer and subsequently (1884) principal of St. John’s Hall, Highbury, a theological college. He had married (1865) Anna Maria Stubbs, to whom this letter may perhaps have been written. CMY recommended it warmly in 'Hints on Reading' MP (September 1876) 287.
