My dear Miss Smith

I did not ask you for the purpose as you may see by my having lost your address and being obliged to send this to Cambridge to be directed on.2

I thought it a pity you should not at least hear of it, and at any rate the child is not black!

If you think of it will you write direct to the lady.3 I am going out and must finish as fast as I can

yours truly
C M Yonge

1Black-edged paper.
2Ann Carter Smith's sister was married to the Master of Clare College, Cambridge.
3Possibly this refers to an advertisement which appeared in MP (September 1877) 296: 'Can any correspondent kindly tell me if there is any school where the orphan daughter of a clergyman could receive a sound education, and where the expenses would be very small? Any information will be thankfully received by Miss Duncan, S. Michael's Hamlet, near Liverpool.'
