Sir

I enclose £1.1 for the use of the poem on the Fireside.1 I believe Mr Ward thought he had enclosed your note, and forgot to do so, and therefore I could not but be mortified at the refusal

yours truly
C M Yonge

1‘Pictures in the Fire’ by Adelaide Procter (1825-1864), whose hugely popular poetry was published by Bell. The cheque for a guinea to G. Bell was debited on 16 April. CMY was including the poem in an anthology published by Ward: Aunt Charlotte's Evenings at Home with the Poets (1881).
