Dear Miss Birley

Many thanks for your two pretty books, I was a little startled at the [???] with which they afflicted you in ‘Yes and no’- but I hope that gentleman’s white lion[?] explains it sufficiently to be a fatherly embrace

Yours sincerely
C M Yonge

1Perhaps Caroline Birley, whose story A Heap of Stones (London: SPCK 1881) had been published in MP (December 1880), 158-184, and who was also the author of We are Seven: A Tale for Children, with illustrations by T. Pym (London: Wells, Gardner 1880). CMY seems to have been concerned about an illustration.
