MS Pusey House WOOD 5/4/11

Dear Madam
I am afraid I have not knowledge enough to help you with questions, as books of the kind do not come much in my way. From what I have heard, Professor Cheyne’s books would be to be avoided.2 I believe there is one which reduces Elijah’s miracles to myths, but I only heard it discussed, and there are also his interpretations of the Psalms.

I saw the first number of the Newbery House Magazine. There the paper on the Psalms, which called the Second not Messianic, was enough for me, so I do not know how they went on, but I rather think the papers were discontinued It is a very difficult thing to choose safe readings for the Higher Education subjects

yours truly
C M Yonge

2The Rev. Thomas Kelly Cheyne (1841-1915), Oriel Professor of the Interpretation of Scripture at Oxford (1885-1908). A.S. Peake in the supplement (1927) to the original DNB observed darkly that his ‘theological position became in his later years more and more indefinite . . .It may . . be questioned whether at the end he could be regarded as a Christian in any tenable sense of that elastic term . .’
