My dear Dorothy
I could not but be quite sure what the contents of your letter would be. It is a peaceful end at last, to a life that was always kept happy and innocent. The real sorrow can only be for Mary, who must miss that one thought and care so dreadfully, though after all there is great comfort in knowing that she has not to leave Frances.2 I only hope she will not break down after the long strain. I am glad you are able to be with her, but it is a most sad time for you all and especially for your Mother. I have been constantly thinking of her and of Geoffrey both my Godchildren3

1With envelope addressed to Miss Dorothea Yonge
2Frances Elizabeth Yonge (1829-3 December 1893), Mary’s youngest and last surviving sister, aunt of Dorothy Yonge. In her memoirs CMY comments that she had been permanently affected by measles in childhood, which sounds as if she was mentally deficient.
3Geoffrey Yonge (1867-24 December 1893), Dorothy’s third brother, a curate, was presumably already ill.
