MS Bodleian Library, Oxford: MS English Letters: e.174 ff 164

Dear Mr Bullock,
I did not think much could be done with his times in France, as they generally did not proceed from St Denys’ foundation but I took a different line, which I hope may suit you. Only can you fill in the name of the seventh Champion of Christendom[.] I think he was of Portugal, but I cannot remember, I wish he was St Maurice of Germany, but I fear he was not2

Yours truly
C M Yonge

1Dated by the reference to St. Maurice in the letter of 19 March 1894 below.
2The Seven Champions of Christendom were the seven national saints of England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, France, Spain and Italy: Saints George, Andrew, Patrick, David, Denis, James and Anthony. St. Moritz or Maurice was a Roman legionary martyred c.285 whose cult was important in southern Germany and Italy. The work CMY was doing was associated with Bullock's Daily Lections project.
