Dear Mrs Egerton
Unluckily the matter of the Grants could not come on till the last and I never found you again. I am sorry to say that the Council refused to forward your application as it would be a dangerous precedent to other Branches who might ask for the same grant. I have written to Mrs Chester and she may send it to you. I am sorry I had to run away from you, but there was need of my seeing Miss Chambers and I hoped you would have spoken when the subject came on.

Yours truly
C M Yonge

1In matching envelope with G F S written in upper left corner and stamp removed, addressed ‘Mrs Egerton/The Cottage/Alresford.’
