MS Bodleian Library, Oxford: MS English Letters: e.174 ff 1

Dear Mr Bullock,
I will try what I can do for Stephen Langton next week – if the Diocesan Synod leaves time.1

I think it would be wiser to keep clear of Pope Pius V.2 There are a good many R Cs that I should much rather deal with

Yours sincerely
C M Yonge

1Stephen Langton (c.1150-1228), archbishop of Canterbury. CMY was evidently proposing to write his biography for the series 'Biographies of Eminent Anglicans', intended for, but never published in, Bullock's Daily Lections.
2Pius V (1504-1572), pope from 1566, canonized in 1712. CMY may have objected to his excommunication of Elizabeth I or to his support for the Spanish Inquisition. The phrase 'would be wiser' suggests also that she remembered the Tractarians' early public relations disasters precipitated by the publication of Romanizing books.
