Dear Mr Wooldridge
My brother told me that he had arranged all the Insurance with you, so I never imagined that it did not include this house. I suppose it was only the freehold property. This house belongs to Magdalen College I do not know at all what it is worth, as I only pay £3 a year for it under the Copyhold. I suppose it might be about £800, the furniture & books £200.
He believed that he had made over the house occupied by Hicks to me, and I have paid rates for it and insurance till now, when I found that the transfer had never been made so that the rent goes to Mrs Yonge, and the Insurance should be paid by her.
The Cottages- freehold for which I ought to pay are ‘The Rising Sun’, which is no longer a public house, but occupied by H Broadway A house occupied by Mrs Bishop One set down to Minham, but now let to Capt Tryan occupied by Oxford.
Four Cottages upon the hill – Mills, Radway, Pearson, Gardener Three at Fryern Hill occupied by Norgate Holly and Hayes
All these are freehold. There are five cottages opposite which are copyhold, they were Magdalen College, but were transferred to the Chamberlayne property, and as long as the lives last, I pay three and eight pence a year for them. The end one, a shop is tiled, the rest thatched all connected. I know I used to pay insurance for these – Price, Barfoot, Ray, Martin, Carbin inhabit them. There is a tiled one at the other end, occupied by Ray junior, which I think is freehold.
I have heard nothing about their insurance since my brother told me he had arranged it with you. I suppose they came under the £1700. They are the chief subject of anxiety as Mr Price is an old feeble man who will not have anyone to sleep in his house
I should be glad to have my house added and to have the matter cleared up about the rest
Yours truly
C M Yonge
