Dear Miss Walker
I read a review of Miss Winslow’s diary, which must have given a fair idea of it. Most Grandisonian days those were! Did you see ‘Like Another Helen’ in which very good imitation letters are written by a young lady who actually was the one woman in the Black Hole. I thought it the best novel I had seen of the season. I wonder whether Gaffer Two Shoes was an imitation of Goody. My cousin has a copy where our prudent Great Grandmother had turned the Ghost in the Church into a dog making arrant nonsense Did you ever come across ‘Juliana or the Affectionate Geese.’ My Mother once read a part of it, but never saw it again. Another recollection of hers was of a novel where there was a family of nine Miss Simmondses, and at some county races, on the box of each carriage there was perched a Miss Simmonds I think we once met a person who likewise remembered the nine Miss Simmondses

I am afraid I must put you off with this short letter for it is a busy day

yours sincerely
C M Yonge
