I am much obliged for your great kindness in allowing my mother and myself the perusal of the enclosed valuable letter. I have been from home for some days, or I would sooner have returned it, and expressed our best thanks for the favour of its perusal

1The mourning paper and ‘my mother and myself’ suggest a date after the death of WCY (26 February 1854).
2Black-edged paper. The letter has been sold by the owner since we transcribed it and is no longer held by the Courtney Library.

    This is the second appearance of this letter. The earlier copy was dated 1854.
