MS fragment Charlotte Mitchell/23

chapters in the little Pink magazine.1 You may be interested to hear that when my brother was in camp at Madyn, he saw the Legionary Ants in the act of stealing their slaves, and found the neighbourhood of the nest of the negro ants strewed with the bodies of the slain. He had a praying mantis for some time in his tent which devoured 18 flies in an hour, I think its name should be changed to preying

I suppose this cold weather keeps you a prisoner, but I hope you have not suffered from it

yours sincerely
CMYonge

  1. Ellen Jordan says:

I saw this piece on the legionary ants when I was looking through the MY. I think it probably came from “Ants and other insects of India Collected from “Manners and Customs of India” in the March 1853 issue, but it could have been in one of the 20 “Chapters on Insects” that ran through 1854 and 1855.
