My dear Fanny

Mrs Selwyn comes on Thursday, the Bishop on Saturday.1 It will be a very thing if you do go down to enliven Mrs Selwyn on Friday for it has so turned out that this week is the only one when I can go down to see my poor dear old May, so I am going down there from Tuesday till Friday evening or Saturday morning I am not sure which. I am sorry to miss you but I dare say you will be about again and poor May wants me. Alice will be there the last day I think.

If you do come down on Friday, and it is not a bad day with Gertrude, she will be delighted to see you for a little while – the best time between 3 and 4 or 5

Your affte cousin
C M Yonge

1The Rt. Rev. John Richardson Selwyn (1844-1898), who became Bishop of Melanesia in 1877 and retired to England finally in September 1891. This letter may date however from his previous visit to England in June 1889-January 1890. The Mrs Selwyn referred to is probably his mother, Sarah Harriet Richardson (d. 1907), widow of the Rt. Rev. George Augustus Selwyn (1809-1878), bishop of New |Zealand and then of Lichfield, though it appears that his second wife Annie Catherine (Mort) Selwyn, whom he had married in 1885. was also present.
