The Rev. Marsham Frederic Argles(1852-1883)

Description

missionary, fellow of St. John's College, Oxford, third son of Julia Argles

Biography

Eric James, The House of My Friends: Memories and Reflections (London: Continuum 2003), 133, states that Marsham Argles went out to join the Oxford mission in Calcutta as one of the founder members of the Brotherhood of the Epiphany. 'But, in 1883 Argles' health had broken down, and he died a fortnight after his return to England.' His sister Edith Argles was subsequently secretary of the Oxford Mission. [Alumni Oxonienses, census returns, birth and death registers; http://www.oxford-mission.org/archives/p4/art0.html] He is not to be confused with his elder brother, the Rev. Canon George Marsham Argles (1841-1920), Rector of St. Clement's York 1871-1919.
