MS Girton College Cambridge, Yonge IV 20

Dear Mr Innes,
I have disposed of Mr Hutchinson’s Stars except for this one chapter. I found when I wrote to him that he had not meant to contribute a regular course but miscellaneous papers now and then. I want however to get the Engineering recollections in America into this volume. They are 7 but short, very entertaining and one may be doubled. The story is short too. I have not got Miss Sewell yet, but I hope to get all in, including Mrs Hallett.1 The chapter of Christian’s Name is very short. I will see about Miss Watson and her German in time. I was going to write to you about Mr Fowler’s magpie but it appeared in your parcel yesterday also this note for you from Mr Church- and a letter which I am sending him to ask if there is any biography of General Church – it is odd that he and the Dean of St Pauls were discouraged from publishing one, because it was not thought likely to take.1 For General Church was a remarkable man who took a great part in the War of Greek Independence.

I am guarding against being overwhelmed this quarter, but here are 3 or 4 papers about a trip to Italy by Mme Linda Villari – just come, with a postcard to answer her upon. I had some from her before, which were liked and she is a good name but continuous papers on Travels are to be avoided I think. I shall defer the answer as to acceptance till Miss Coleridge comes

Yours truly
C M Yonge

1The letter mainly relates to the disposition of contributions to the issue of MP for August 1890 and later months. Elizabeth Missing Sewell published 'Thoughts on Scripture Texts' in the September and October 1890 issues of MP. Mrs Hallett was a regular contributor, but she did not publish anything before 'Country Society of Yesterday' MP (December 1891) 637-644.
2The Rev. Canon Charles Marcus Church (d.1915) was co-editor of the 1895 biography of his uncle, General Sir Richard Church (1784-1873), liberator of Greece. The Dean of St.Paul’s, the Very Rev. Richard William Church (1815-1890) was brother to Canon Church.
