My dear Hannah3

At last I have got the direction you wished for – it is after all where it was and the address should be to

The Committee
32 Southampton Street
Strand4

I think they ought to make their advertisements clearer and better known, and I believe the clergyman who used to manage it is dead, and that his wife is as much in want as any she used to interest herself about, but that the organisation is just recovering the loss. There was a letter from Augusta yesterday speaking of poor Charlotte as still lingering –

We much hope that if you should find it a convenience, if Stoke Lodge is let before Mrs Rogers goes to Ryde, that you will come to us – you know nothing can be quieter than we are, and we should have such pleasure in trying to make you comfortable. Do not think of answering this –

Your affectionate cousin
C M Yonge

1Sewn onto a piece of paper with address “Miss Nutis[?] Popham/Chilton Rectory/Hungerford, suggesting that the autograph was collected by one of the daughters of the Rev. John Leyborne-Popham (1811-1872), Rector of Chilton Foliat.
2Dated on the assumption that it is addressed to the recently widowed Hannah Yonge.
3The internal evidence suggests that the letter is addressed to Hannah (Rogers) Carey, daughter of W. Rogers, who married (1860) James Arthur Yonge (1822-1864), third son of CMY’s Eton uncle, and, secondly (1874) Charles Egerton Carey. Stoke Lodge was their home, and seems to have been afterwards occupied by his youngest brother George Edward Yonge (1824-1904). James Yonge died before 16 September 1864.
4 Notices to Correspondents, MP (June 1865), 684, stated: 'There is a depot at 32 Southampton Street, where half-worn garments for the use of indigent clerical families are received and distributed according to need.'
