MS Dr Susan Walton

My dear Madam
I am much obliged for the very interesting account of the terrible cyclone. Don’t you think one might have the official account of your brother’s conduct with the ‘butter’ – it would surely not be a breach of confidence.1 I shall be very glad to put the whole in as soon as I can.

Yours very truly
C M Yonge

1The article on the cyclone at Masulipatam is described in letters from the assistant collector there, Francis Brandt. This letter is evidently to one of his three sisters, and has arbitrarily been assigned to the eldest, though it may equally have been addressed to Emily Charlotte Brandt or Margaret Adelaide Brandt (it seems odd but he did have two sisters whose first name was Margaret). The 'butter' was the official commendation of Brandt's conduct.

  1. K Saville-Smith says:

Thanks for putting this up. Francis Brandt was my great, great grandfather. He did some interesting drawings of his house and other buildings after the cyclone. It is a little unclear what did the damage but most descriptions talk of a tsunami like storm wave. The repeated use of a christian name was not uncommon at that time. Francis’ mother was called Margaret.
