My dear Julia
I shall be very happy to see Mr. Willingham if he cares to call on me, but I am afraid the only effect will be the passing call, as I live in such a quiet way, and it is a good way off, as Winton House is quite on the other side of Winchester.2 I have great hopes of Elizabeth Wordsworth’s College. I am very anxious about it by way of antidote and I have great confidence in her and her power of influencing, and I think it is great gain to get a girl like your Edith, not very young, and with formed, steadied principles at the first start upon which everything really turns. They tell Miss Wordsworth at Girton that she will find it impossible to keep up individual influence or supervision but I expect that it will proved that it is the religious spirit that just makes the difference in that way. And so Marsham follows his work to India.3 I should think the Bishop of Calcutta a very delightful person to work with, I met him just before he went out. This letter would get on better if there were not six people in the room, most of them talking. Are you washed away as well as everyone else?
Your affectionate
